Chapters 9-12
Hi Readers! Please read chapters 9-12 and share your thinking in the blog. You can talk about the plot, characters, setting, vocabulary or anything else that you NOTICE and want to REACT to. Remember that it is important to point out specifically what you are noticing, but you actually show your thinking skills by then reacting to what you have noticed. I would like each of you to blog at least twice. Post your first thoughts, then return to the site so that you can react to what other people in the group are noticing. You of course can blog more than twice since it is very beneficial to discuss the book.

ReplyDeleteI wonder what a trinket is? Maybe it is abead, or even just a piece of jewelry.Does anyone else know, or at least have an idea of what it means?

ReplyDeleteWhat does the word skirted mean? Does it mean travel maybe? I don't think so, but it's just a guess.

ReplyDeleteHave any of you noticed that instead of Aluet the book says Aleut. Mrs. Heilmann may have made a mistake but that's not very likely.

ReplyDeleteSomething I have noticed is that Karana is becoming very independent.Like she tried to travel to the island that everyone else is at , she made her own house and she is making a lot of weapons.My reaction to this is that many men had to make the weapns and built the shelter, but now Karana is doing all of that by herself.

ReplyDeletei also realized Karana is getting very independant, but she has to be because her brother just died from the dogs and her father was killed by Aluets adn her sister is on the other island. On the cover of the book i see that she is sitting next to a dog and she is being friendly to it and it the same way to her. that almost makes me think that maybe the wildogs will become friends with Karana.

ReplyDeleteOne of Jay's vocabulary words was trinket. I thought it was a bead too.But I looked it up in the dictioary. We were right, it said that it is a small peice of jewelry. Mrs.Heilmann said that the dolphins were going to be a bigger poart of the storie when you got more into the book, so I wonder if Karana is going to try to sail to the other island again.I also wonder if this time something bad happens and the dolphins help her out.

ReplyDeleteI thought that it was very wise that Karana stopped sitting around griveing for all her loses and moved on in life and finaly made a place she could be comfortable in and call home.I really feel bad for Karana becausre NO KID should have to go through this. I think now a day kids could not of done what Karana has already done and tried to do. For now a day kids don't do as much work as kids mabey even 50 years ago did. That also must of been hard for Karana not being to make to the land that lays east. But I know she made a good efort far better than anything kids now a days could do. I wonder, if the plot is going to be how she survies and eventruly killing all the wild dogs our at least enough to satisfy her angery. I don't think she will kill all of them any way because I think the cover of the book kind of hints she might get a pet dog because on the cover it shows her sitting there on the Blue Dolphin Island alone with one dog.

ReplyDeleteTo answer your question about the word skirted Jay, I do belive you are right. Like for example "As I skirted across the road." Your lucky guess was a good educational guess I mean if you put travel in instead of skirted.It still makes sense. "As I traveled across the road." I Too along with Cassie and Aaron belive that Karana is getting VERY INDEPENTENT. She is doing thinghs that normaly woman would'nt do and at the same time is doing what the woman would do too.

ReplyDeletei saw that Mariono said that he feels bad for Karana because no kid should have to go through that, and one personal connection i had was my cousin, Genna has lost her mom and then 1 year later, her little sister. Her mom and dad were never married and her dad gave full-custudty to my grandmother, she misses her mom, sister, and dad alot, but at least she has her grandma and grandpa, karana has nobody, no friends, no family, no nothing. i agree with jay about tkirted, i think it means like to casually run from something but i think 95% that i'm wrong. c u later!

ReplyDeleteI have come to realize that if we would just listen as we are told, things would go more smoothly. For example in the book if Ramo would of listened to Karana and just get on the ship and not of went to go get his spear NONE of this would of happend every thing would of been normal. I think all of us can learn from this mistake that Ramo made although his punishment was a lot more severe than it might turn out in todays world.

ReplyDeleteI also think that Karana is getting very independent but if you were on a island what would you be doing would you let yourself get eaten by wild dogs or would you do all the things that Karana is doing. I also think that if i had to do what Karana is doing i would be very scared and I'm glad to have a family with me. I also think that maybe a wild dog will get to be good friends with Karana and help her on the island.

ReplyDeleteI still don't really have a good prediction about when the dolphins are going to pop up in the story. They could come into the story when something bad is happening or something good is happening. The dolphins also could be good or bad in this story

ReplyDeletejust like Josh I was wondering what sinew meant. Maybe a type of vine. And I forgot obout Ulape in the story so I was thinking everyone in her family was dead. Also I noticed the girl kills alot of the dogs but never the leader. I think the leader dies last and fights back. I usually love dogs but in this story I hope they leave or die for killing Ramo. I don't see how the dolphins could play a big role in the story even though they are in the title.

ReplyDeleteI just remembered. I Wanted to say that if I was alone and dogs killed my sister I would not hesitate about makeing wepons. I would just start no matter what the rule was. I would be very determined to kill the dogs. OK happy bloging.

ReplyDeleteI am mad we had had to stop where we did because know we have to wait and see if she gets a Sea Elaphant or not.
Also, did anyone notice that EVERYONE BLOGGED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME EVER! I think it means that everyone is enjoying it, at being responsible with it, too.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jay about being disappointed where we stopped reading. I think Karana is coping pretty well in the situation she is in. Her whole family is dead, and all of her friends had left. In this time in the World we are fortunate that things like that wouldn't happen because of the way America has evolved to. What I'm hinting at is that if Karana had been in America in that time it could happen just as likely but in this time, 2009, it would not happen as likely.

ReplyDeleteSkirted is a way of traveling but not in that sense. Let's say you were by a border of a state and you began walking alongside the border, you are skirting the border of Wisconsin. It is basically traveling but each Jay and Marino had good guesses.
