Introduction

Welcome to our Island of the Blue Dolphins blog page. I am excited to read your thinking and see what you have to share with the other group. For our first activity I would like you to answer the question below. Happy Blogging!

1.) Now that you know that the genre of the book is Historical Fiction, how would you change the summary that you originally wrote? You don't have to re-write your summary, just tell me what you think might need to change with your prediction of the plot.

I originally thought that the dolphins and otters were like humans and were fighting as a team against the Russians. Now I know that couldn't happen because that is fantasy. Maybe the Russians come and kill all the otters and dolphins instead.

I would change my answer by not makeing otters gnaw at the wood of the ship becaus I don't think that could happen. It is unlikely to happen. I think the dolphin are in danger because of Russians or IndIans

I originally thought that this book would be fantasy but now that I know it is not I know I am wrong about the part where the wind was shaped like a dolphin and hit the cliff and the dagger fell and almost hit the Russian's Captain. Also, I don' think there is such thing as the Gulley of the Golden Otters ot the Aluet Indians so that would also make it fantasy.

My summary was not a fantasy summary so apparently I got the genre right! I think my plot might still work, even though we just learned what the genre of the book really is. I do not think I had a very good prediction of what the book is going to be about, so I think the book will be completely different than what I originally thought. I wonder what the dolphins have to do with the book. I think they are important, but I could be wrong. Sometimes the title is not what the whole entire book is about. I am excited to start reading this book.[The Island of the Blue Dolphins]

I still think that Karana is a character and the Indians are called the Aluet indians.

If this really happened, is there really a Blue Dolphin's Island? I wonder if there is. Also if you think about it the Russians couldn't have a battle because when they were trying to rule, the Cold War, there was no fighting but only threats of nuclear bombs and other matter. I should've thought of that in my summary but I just remembered now. I also agree with Jay about how he thought that the title of the book may or may not be part of the story.

Russians are probalbly the bad guys. Except you must ask yourself, why? Why would they be the Russians be the evil ones of the stories.
I think they will be the enemies because they take over the Indians territory so they can hide their nuclear weapons in the forest. Of course this is just what I think. It's highly probable.

Hey Josh you made a good point about Karana being a character but Karana could be an Indian tribe too, couldn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Jay

I agree with Josh about the Russians being thje bad guys. What would a tribe of Indians do to invade an army of Russians, or to destroy a beautiful island with Dolphins, and otters swimming all around. In fact, that sounds like the Indians home to me. It would be the perfect spot for a nature-loving indian.

  10. Jay's new summary plus questions

My new summary goes like this:The Aluet Indians are fighting a fierce war against their enemies, the Russians. Some of the cowardly Russians sailed away on the Pacific Ocean, leaving the other Russians behind to continue the war against the Indians.
I wonder what the otters, the dolphins, and Karana have to do with the story. Maybye they don't have anything to do with the story. Maybe there are just dolphins on the island, and that's how the book got it's name. Maybe there are otters on the island, too. Does that mean that they have anything to do with the story? Maybe Karana is just the name of one of the Indians, does that mean that he's the ,main character? I don't know. These are all merely thoughts. Does anybody else have any other suggestions that might help us figure out what it means?
Also, what if the Aluet Indians, and the Russians are not fighting? Just because people are enemieies. doesn't mean they are always fighting, does it? Because if they aren't fighting, thaen every single one of our summaries, are way, way off.
Another thing, how do you guys think this book is going to end? We are all talking about what happens in the middle of the book, but what about the end? Or even anybody with thoughts about the Beginning? Because I bet we could get a lot more accurate summaries, if somebody gave us a good idea of how the book started, or how it ended.
Another thing I'm wondering, is if the Russians, and the Aluet Indians really are at war against eachother, is it a steady, and constant war? Or is it a sneak attack by one team once in awhile? Also, what is the setting of the battlefield? Are there lots of trees for good hiding places? Or is it all flat, and very hard to surprise somebody.
Another really big thing, what if there isn't an island? What if that is just a title? Maybe Karana just dreams about a beautiful island shaped like a fish. With blue dolphins, and otters. Maybe at the end they win the war, and Karana, believing the island really exists, goes out in search of the island, and at the very end of the book, she finds it, and they all live happily ever after. Or maybe not. Like all the other things, it's just a thought.
I still can't get my mind off the otters, and the dolphins, though. How can they play such a big role in the story, while still acting like normal otters, and dolphins.

I think I had the genre right the first time but I also know that it is unlikely.I still think that Karana and Aluet are people and they are killing dolphins. And to answer Jays question, I think the author will pull you in to make love the dolphins and otters so much that it makes them your favorite.I can't wait to start reading the book and keep on bloging.

Have any of you noticed that the time it says you posted your comment is wrong. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else thought that this book was going to take place during the Cold War. It would make sense because the Russians were the threat during the Cold War, even though you can't really call it a war because there was no fighting.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Aaron

i disagree with u josh because if it did happen durring the cold war than why are there indains and dolphins and otters in the book and why would it happen on an island?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Aaron

i just noticed that Taylor didn't blog once yet, and i think there is a big war going on but it was farther back in history than the cold war and i deffenetly think Aluet and Karana one is a Russian and one is a Indian and they go into the kids perspective of this war, what it would be like to be a kid on an Indain ship (because i think this happens at sea) and a Russian ship and how scary it is somethimes.

  15. Aaron

i was just reading the conversation between josh and jay and i have to say i think the Russians are the bad guys and i also wonder why do we think the russians are the antaganists (bad guys) and i think it is probably because they have been a big threat to alot of other countries and a big factor in ALOT of wars, and we think the indians as good guys only because Chistipher Columbus called Native Americans that, the Indians in this book i think are accually from india not from the Americas, for all we know the Russians and Indains have teamed up and are both hunting the otters and dolphins, (but i don't think that is the case) we all have different thoughts but now that i've wrote this, who do u REALLY think is the bad guys.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Aaron

i wonder if the name of the island has something to do with dolphins but that is it and the dolphins have nothing to do with it, for example, we didn't figure out why the book Where The Red Fern Grows until the very end, what if this book is the same way,the Island Of The Blue dolphins is a symble and it means something but dosen't play a big factor in the start 'til the end of the climax.

  17. Aaron

since this is the 5th time i wrote in-a-row i think i should talk about characters... i don't think indians from india not U.S.A. have tribes so i don't think Karana or Aluet are Native American Tribes because if the author is American (which i think he is) wouldn't he have used the word, or name Native American instead of Indian, or maybe im the one that is wrong and maybe the "Indains" are really Native Americans, but Russia is thousands of miles just to get to the Atlantic Ocean, just Imangive getting there with big ships and then sailing all the way to America, and the native Americans wouldn't and couldn't make it across the Atlantic because all they had was little birch tree canoes (could that really get u across a whole ocean?) and they didn't no how to make a ship let alone drive it!

  18. Josh

I didn't think about the Indians. Oh well, I also realized that Taylor hasn't blogged yet. I also agree about the Where the Red Ferns synopsis. Because I've asked my mom if she knew what the Blue Dolphins Island is and she has no idea. So it most likely is a symbol.

Blogging is fun. I think that instead of Rainy being the brother of the main characters it would be Aluet and the sister would be Karana. Or Karana and Aluet could be girls. Maybe. I can't wait to find out!

  20. Josh

I've also noticed that Marino hasn't blogged yet. 6:56. Anyways, I think that the Russians will hold one sibling and the indians will hold the other sibling and the siblings will meet at some point in the book. Yet again, I can't wait to find out!

I'm surprised no one has answered me yet. Jay did make a good point about Karana maybe being a tribe, maybe I could Google it. Highly probable. I think while I'm at it I'll look up Blue Dolphins Island.

I found something on Karana. At the webpage:

No problem. I just wanted to help everyone know a little about Karana's background, if it is the Karana we think.

  27. Aaron

i figured out that karana is a Indian girl who lives on the island of blue dolphins (which is accually San Nicholas) with her brother ( i think that might be Aluet) she and her brother are left marroned while the other villagers are left behind. if u dont beleive me than check this out..... http://eduscapes.com/newbery/61a.html

i have no idea what the heck the otters or russians have to do with the book but i think that the dolphins don't play a factor at all acept for the island

TAYLOR AND MARINO STILL HAVEN'T BLOGGED! IT'S 8:00 ALREADY. I tried to go on your website Aaron but it didn't let me get on it. I probably typed it wrong, oh well. Also, I know what the Russians and otters have to do with the story. The otters are the prey and the Russians are stealing the otters away from the Aluet. That's what it said on Wikipedia I think, because otherwise it still said something like it.

  30. Josh

I found the web site! It did tell me those things. I think we can now change some off our predictions. Now we know the Aluets are Indians and that Blue Dolphins Island is actually San Nicholas. I hope the other people are blogging even though it's pretty late. Ah, only 8:05. I can't wait to tell Marino about our discoveries in the morning. I still can't believe how far we were from the real truth though. It's really funny and weird at the same time.

    Hi Everyone,

I am so excited and impressed with all of your thinking. I have noticed that you are doing a lot of terrific thinking about the book and beginning to investigate some of the words that you didn't know. When we meet again we will talk about what the actual setting is of the book. Remember that setting doesn't only have to do with the location of the story, but also the time period. When dealing with Historical fiction in particular, it is important to think about the time period because that will have a huge effect on the entire plot of the story. Remember earlier in the year when we talked about what could and couldn't happen in a story because of the setting? Marino, Taylor and Aaron all had difficulty with posting at school today because the password wouldn't load. I will talk to Mrs. Tucker tomorrow so that we can get that taken care of. I can't wait to have Mrs. Ebersold, Mrs. Connaughty and Mrs. Punzenberger look at your thoughts, I love bragging about my students great thinking!

  32. Taylor

I also thought that the book was going to be fantasy but I kind of heard Mrs. Heilmann tell the other reading group that the book was historical fiction I honestly don't really know what I could change in my summary because everything in my summary could happen in real life.

  33. Marino Taylor

At first I thought this book was Fantasy because of the title Island of the Blue Dolphins because normally dolphins don't live on land so a assumed that the book was Fantasy. I would change the part about how Dolphins and otters at first lived in peace but the Russians started the war. Also I think that there might be war but it will not be with the dolphins. Instead I think the Russians will come and take over the island and will destroy the animals and enslave the Indians.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Taylor

I know the genre is not fantasy. But I can't think of anything that could really happen in historical fiction book about dolphins well I mean I could but I can't picture it out yet. Could it be about the Indians fighting the Russians and the otters and dolphins become friends with the Indians and are helping in different little ways and maybe there side will win and become friends forever and help each other out for the rest of there lives or it could be a totally different idea like maybe the otters and dolphins are in trouble and the Indians are trying to help the animals and maybe the Russians are doing something mean and cruel to the animals.
