chapters 1-4

Hi Readers! I am looking forward to reading your thoughts on chapters 1-4. Remember that the first chapters in most fictions books give you information about the characters and the setting. Now that you have more knowledge of the book, what are you discovering about these two story elements? Happy Reading!

I noticed that most of us picked "an island shaped like a fish," and I found out in chapters 1-5, that those who said that were right. I also found out that Aleut is NOT an Indian tribe, but a band of Russians instead. This really amazed me because as far as I know, everybody said that the Aleut's were an Indian tribe-including me-. I wonder if, as we get farther into the book, there will be more things that surprise us?
Also, the Russians and the Indians DO go to war, as almost all of us had guessed. I cannot believe that in the the first few minutes of the battle, Karana's father was killed. Just like that. We learned that he was like the chief of the Indian tribe, and was very important to them. I wonder how Karana felt when she saw her father laying there, dead, by the coastline. I know it would pretty much kill me.
Are there any people who would change their summarie's just from reading the first four chapters? I know my summary would stay the same pretty much, except for the fact that Aleut is a ship of Russians, not an Indian tribe, like everybody thought.
Know we know what the otters have to do with the story, but as I thought, it really wasn't that much. we still don't know what the dolphins have to do with the story. Maybe they just live around the island, and that's all there is to it. Or, maybe they have something to do with the story. We won't know until we read farther into the book.

Jay, u were only supposed to read chapters 1-4 and i cant beilieve the cheif of the village (not tribe) died just because of some stupid Russians, i knew they would be the bad guys, what i didn't get was why the Aleuts threw their otter felts overboard before they left and i'm surprised the author didn't write more about how karana reacted to her father's death, i also think that the Indains are acually from India not U.S.A. because Karans's father said the Russians and Aleuts were from the north and as we all should know Russia is located North of India, not U.S.A. and josh and i predected the story happens during a war, we were wrong... i think so anyway... this wasn't really a war the fighting only lasted for a few hours, not years or months or even weeks, i tought Karana's brother was gong to be named Aleut but i was wrong, his name was and still is Ramo, and i thought since two of the words were left and behind i thought Karana and Ramo were gong to get left behind while the others leave the island but that didn't happen yet, i think it will later on though. I LOVE BLOGGING!!!

Wow that was an exiting 4 chapters. I just have a couple things to say about it. One thing is how are you supposed to pronounce Orlav? And I thought there would be a fight when the Aluets landed. Also what is a league when you use it the way they did? Why did the man used to pull his ear when he got mad? When they mentioned otter fur I thought of beaver fur Because of the lesson in social studies.I, along with alot of other people were right when we said that Russians were very bad. I personaly LOVE the book and blogging so I can't wait until we do this again!!!!

Aaron, sorry about the name thing!
I wonder why Josh, Marino, and Taylor haven't blogged yet? Does anybody have any idea of what the next few chapters are going to be about? I know that the war is going to continue, but the author can't just write four chapters about war highlights, can he?
Tracer, I noticed what you commented about how to pronounce Orlav. That is a good question, and also one I don't know the answer to. Aaron, I disagree with you about how the "chief died, just because of some stupid Russians," because their village is not very experienced in war, and for the Russians war is almost common, so that is why the chief died, although it wasn't because of some stupid Russians, it was because of some war-experienced Russians. I'm sorry for disagreeing with you Aaron, but I just was stating how I felt, and that was how I felt.
Also, I have not answered Tracers question about the Captian pulling his ear when he got really mad. I of course do not know for certain, but what I think is two things:#1.Maybe that is the Russians way of expressing when they are very mad. Or, #2.Maybe captains do that when they get very mad.

I'm surprised that the brief fight with the Aleuts happened so early in the book and that the Russians would leave early as well. I think we all thought the Russians would be a recurring threat and be there the whole book. I agree with Aaron about how Scott O'Dell, the author, hadn't written Karana's reaction to her father's death, the way it had shown Ulape had.

  7. Mrs.Heilmann,

Hi everyone. Remember that I love hearing any thinking you are doing about that book, but I would like to specifically hear more details on the setting. Remember that setting is time and place.

I just read chapters 1-4 and WOW! Isn't it cool that an island is shaped like a dolphin. But i think it is sort of odd that some characters are dolphins and the island they live around is shaped like a dolphin on its side. I also think that the father was sort of dumb to tell Chief Chowig his secret name because for some reason i think Karana's father didn't really know Chief Chowig and if he is dangerous or not. How do you say Ghalas-at??? I do agree with Tracer that it is odd when Karana's father pulls his ear when he's mad. I also thought that when the Russians came to the island they would have fought. I love this book and i can't wait to see what happens next in the book!!!! And what do you think is going to happen to the otter? Will the Russains come back and kill all otter by the island or are the people on the island going to do something about what is happing.

I still think that the Russians are the bad guys of the story.Like for example when they start a fight with the Indian tribe. I have come to belive that this time period must bewteewn the 1600 through 1900 because of how they Russians wanted that otter fur. I think if the Russians come back the Indians will do some thing to stop them. Just like in soical studdies at first the French and the Indians got along okay but when they started getting greedy and promlems started to happen. I wonder, if the Russians were exploring and looking for riches and fame around the same time as the French?I think the Russians are going to return to take the Indians but Karana will ecsape. I do not think this story could take place now in the 21st century because otter furs are not as popular as they might of been awile ago.Plus there are not really any native American tribes any more. I am almost positive that it did not take place before the 1400's because time of exploring really didn't start until 1450.I am exicted to read more on Blue Dolphin Island!

I realized taht the setting has alot to do with the book, if the setting was in the middle of Russia than the dolphins and otters wouldn't be able to live there because there wouldn't be any water. I don't know the time setting but it would have to be a long time ago because the Indians nor the Russians were using guns in the war. and on the Island there were no sturdy building made of brick or cement like we make now, the village people were all fighting together, people came out of their houses and fought. That wouldn't happen now because do u think that if a gang of iraqi with guns raided Wausau we probably wouldn't run out of our houses and try to attack them, it would be pointless and dumb. so my point is that the setting has so much to do with this book as it has with many others.
